Bad Lobenstein

Right at the green heart of Germany between the Franconian Forest, Thuringian Schiefergebirge Mountains and the valley of the Saale is the idyllic town of Bad Lobenstein. Regardless of from which direction you approach Bad Lobenstein, you will already see from afar the “Old Tower” on a hilltop, the town’s most famous landmark. Bad Lobenstein is more than 750 years old and looks back on a long history. First mentioned in documents in 1250 and awarded a town charter in 1278, Lobenstein was the main seat and residence of the Princes of Reuß Younger Line Lobenstein from 1647-1824. The 150-year spa tradition of Lobenstein was continued with the opening of a new rehabilitation clinic for orthopaedics and psychosomatics in 1994. Since November 2002, the town has also been the home of the ARDESIA Thermal Baths, which are fully equipped for state-of-the-art spa and wellness programmes under the motto of moor-water-light. Ardesia is the Italian word for slate, which has shaped the character and wealth of our region. In the shady woods and along the River Saale, you will find a well-marked network of hiking trails. There are plenty of sports and leisure facilities: riding, a trip in a horse-drawn carriage, a bowling and skater centre, crazy golf course and tennis courts, fishing and watersports, Waldbad pool and gymnasium, cinema and library and cultural events all the year round. Bad Lobenstein has also become known for its successful sportsmen and –women, such as the cross-country skiing world champion Axel Teichmann, athlete Anja Rücker, canoeist Andre Puff and roll skier Dirk Grimm.
