This approximately 198-kilometre route of fascinating contrasts begins in Thuringia in Sparnberg or Blankenstein and takes you across the Bleiloch Dam to Saalburg. For children, the great attractions here are the Fairy-Tale Forest and the summer dry toboggan run. Passing Burgk Castle with its Silbermann organ, the Ziegenrück Hydroelectricity Museum and the Hohenwarte Dam, you arrive in Saalfeld, which boasts the most colourful show grottoes in the world. Via Rudolstadt with Heidecksburg Castle and the "Saalemaxx" Leisure and Adventure Pool, you come to Uhlstädt. Here you can carry your bike onto to a Saale raft and travel for a while without legwork! The route then continues through the Saale Valley via Jena and the Dornburg Castles to Camburg. In Kaatschen, there is a direct link to the Ilm Valley Cycle Trail and in Blankenstein to the Rennsteig Cycle Trail.
The Thuringian section of the Cycle Trail includes mountain regions with some steep ascents and descents and is suitable for cyclists with sporting ambitions. The section between Saalfeld and Camburg is family-friendly with no more than small hills.
