Ilm Valley Cycle Trail

Route guide

Start at Allzunah (direct link to the Rennsteig Cycle Trail) and cycle via Stützerbach and Ilmenau with its Goethe memorials to Langewiesen (show mine, Heinse House). Shortly before you get to Stadtilm, it is worth making a detour to Singen to the smallest brewery in Thuringia. Via Stadtilm (Town of the 7 Wonders), Kleinhettstedt (art and mustard mill) and Dienstedt (karst cave), you arrive at Kranichfeld (Baumbach House, Upper Castle). An outing to the nearby Hohenfelden reservoir lake with the Avenida Thermal Baths is recommended. Then you continue via Bad Berka to Weimar, the Town of Classicism. The next places on the route are Tiefurt with a castle and park, Oßmannstedt with the Wieland Estate and Apolda (Town and Bell Museum, House of Art). In Eberstedt, cyclists can visit a walk-in sundial and a cyclists’ church. The Bad Sulza Toskana Thermal Baths offer the amazing Liquid Sound experience – bathing in sound, colour and light. And this health resort and wine town in Thuringia has more to offer too, namely a copy of Goethe’s summer house in Weimar. From here, it is worth visiting the memorial site of Napoleon’s Battle of Auerstedt. In Kaatschen-Weichau, the end of this tour, there is a direct link to the River Saale Cycle Trail.
