Augustinian Church

The Protestant Augustinian Monastery of Erfurt is a unique architectural monument of the medieval art of monasteries. At the same time it is known as an important site of Luther's stay. In 1505 Martin Luther asked to be accepted to the Augustinian Hermit Monastery. The church order is famous for its wisdom. Strict religious and ascetic practices follow a minute timetable, as well as an order-intensive scientific education determine the life of Martin Luther in the monastery during 5 years. Today, visitors from all over the world are shown around the Augustinian Monastery and they can visit the Augustinian Church with its precious windows from around 1310, its cloister, the Renaissance Court and a Luther exhibition. During the Second World War the monastery was heavily destroyed. Reconstructed in its historical looks it is the site of international conferences and meetings. It invites you to conferences and stays, with 9 historical conference rooms and 75 beds in single and double rooms. An important library is part of this complex. Since 1996 a small group of nuns has lived in the Augustinian Monastery. They belong to the protestant religious community of women (Communitär Casteller Ring), which follows the spirit of the Holy Benedict. These 7 nuns pray 4 times a day the hour prayer of the church and celebrate services in the Augustinian Church. They also work in the "Klosterstube", a public and friendly, small café. They will take time to talk to you and spend time with you. Their work is financed by donations.
